Wurtulla sits midway down the Kawana strip with surf on one side, the Nicklin Way on the other and Currimundi Lake at its southern end. It is one of the few suburbs we serve with a genuine choice of training venue: south to Golden Beach on the Pumicestone Passage, or north to Maroochydore on the Maroochy River.
Either way it is one practical day, with the theory completed online first and all equipment supplied. We hold a Maritime Safety Queensland BoatSafe approval and deliver nationally accredited training through Australian Boating College, RTO #3399.
Two questions lead the jet ski licence in Wurtulla enquiries we take. The first is about Currimundi Lake, and whether the tidal lake at the end of the suburb is somewhere you can ride. The second is about venues, because Wurtulla is far enough south that Golden Beach is a genuine alternative to Maroochydore rather than a token option.
Both are worth answering properly before you book, because they change the shape of your day. The lake answer is more restrictive than most locals expect, and the venue answer depends less on distance than on which water you intend to ride once you are licensed. We would rather work that out with you on the phone than have you book the wrong one.
Running three permanent venues means we can send you to the right one instead of the only one. For a Wurtulla rider that is a real advantage: if you plan to ride the Pumicestone Passage and launch at Caloundra, learning at Golden Beach puts you on that water from the start. If your weekends will be spent on the Mooloolah or the Maroochy, north makes more sense.
Beyond that, the local content is specific rather than generic. The Kawana strip has its own pattern of restrictions, the lake, the surf beach, the ramps at either end, and none of it is obvious from a map or a statewide theory booklet. A reminder that catches people at the booking stage: the standalone jet ski course requires a current Queensland recreational boat licence. Starting from scratch means booking the Boat and Jet Ski Combo instead.
Jet Ski (PWC) Licence, standalone. For riders already holding a Queensland recreational boat licence. One practical day, at Golden Beach or Maroochydore, covering launch and retrieval, low-speed control, deep-water re-boarding and the speed and no-wash zones that apply at both ends of the Kawana strip.
Boat and Jet Ski Combo. Both classes in one day, at whichever venue you choose. The usual booking for Wurtulla households who have bought a ski without ever holding a marine licence, and the one that avoids a second trip in either direction.
Recreational Boat Licence. For anyone launching a boat at Caloundra, Currimundi or the Mooloolah and working the Passage or heading offshore. Navigation rules, buoyage, safety equipment and assessed handling in sheltered water. A frequent starting point before the ski class is added.
Wurtulla forms part of the long Kawana coastal development that reshaped this stretch of shoreline from the 1960s onward, filling the strip between the Nicklin Way and the beach with residential estates where there had been dune country and banksia scrub. Its southern edge meets Currimundi Lake, a tidal creek system that opens to the sea across a sand bar and has long been the area's main family swimming spot. The suburb has beach frontage but no boat ramp, so water access means travelling south toward Caloundra or north to the Mooloolah River.
The course itself is the same wherever you sit it: the theory online first, in your own time, then a day on the water with a trainer before the assessment. You need a licence for any boat with an engine over 4.5 kilowatts, which is nearly every tinny, runabout and cruiser. Pass, and the Queensland licence never expires.
