Queensland jet ski (PWC) licence explained

A jet ski is a personal watercraft, and Queensland treats it as its own licence class. Here is what the PWC licence covers, how it sits alongside a boat licence, and what to expect on your practical day.

Queensland jet ski (PWC) licence explained

What the PWC licence covers

To ride a jet ski or any personal watercraft in Queensland you need a personal watercraft (PWC) licence. It is a separate class from the recreational marine (boat) licence, although the water rules overlap.

The two are not independent, and this catches people out when they book. To sit our jet ski course on its own you must already hold a current recreational boat licence. If you have never been licensed and you only want to ride a jet ski, you still start with the boat licence, which is why the combo course covers both in a single day and is the usual route in.

Age and supervision

You must be at least 16 to hold a PWC licence in Queensland. The licence has no expiry once issued, and like the boat licence it never needs re-sitting.

Jet skis are fast and responsive, so the course spends real time on safe speed, keeping clear distances, and the no-wash and speed zones that apply close to shore and in the Sunshine Coast canals and passages.

Your practical day

After the online theory, the practical day is hands-on. You learn to launch, control and re-board the craft, read the water, and handle it confidently in the sheltered water at Caloundra, Maroochydore or Noosa. All equipment is provided, and the trainers are used to nervous first-time riders.

You complete the assessment on the day and leave with the certificate you need to apply for your PWC licence.

Common questions

Frequently Asked

Is a jet ski licence the same as a boat licence in Queensland?

No. A jet ski needs a personal watercraft (PWC) licence, a separate class from the recreational marine (boat) licence. They are not independent though: to sit the jet ski course on its own you must already hold a current boat licence. If you hold neither, the combo course covers both together in one day.

How old do you have to be to get a jet ski licence in Queensland?

You must be at least 16 to hold a PWC licence in Queensland. Once issued it does not expire and never needs re-sitting.

Can I get my boat and jet ski licence on the same day?

Yes. Our Boat and Jet Ski Combo covers both the recreational marine and PWC licences in a single day on the Sunshine Coast, and it is booked as one course rather than two.
