Most people who picture a jet ski at Noosa Heads picture the river mouth and the open sea past it. Fair enough. Just know the river has its own rule book for skis. Of the four Sunshine Coast waterways that meet the sea over a bar, the Noosa River is the only one declared a marine zone, with limits on recreational personal watercraft. The water around Woods Bay and the Noosa Heads canals is 6-knot water. Your licence day runs a few kilometres upriver at Noosaville, on Gympie Terrace. Theory's online first. Then a one-on-one practical on the ski, with the jet ski and all the gear supplied.
Getting a jet ski licence is the straightforward bit. At Noosa Heads, the harder bit is knowing what the river will let a ski do once you've got one. The Noosa River is a declared marine zone, and personal watercraft are one of the main things the zone deals with. So a Noosa Heads rider needs two things from a course: the licence, and a clear picture of the local rules sitting on top of it. That second part is what this page is about. None of it is hard once someone lays it out, and most of it comes down to where you are on the river and what time of year it is.
Start with the big one. Recreational jet skis are banned on the Noosa River upstream of the Noosa Waters inlet. Below that point they can travel down to the river mouth to get out to the ocean. Read plainly, the lower river works as a route to the sea for a private ski. It isn't a playground. MSQ's marine zone rules set the exact terms, so read them before your first ride on the river.
Second, tricks are off the table. Freestyling, surfing and wave jumping are banned on the Noosa River. The wake jumping you see in ski videos gets you in trouble here. Plenty of new owners find that out the hard way.
Third, speed. The gazetted 6-knot zone takes in Little Woods Bay, Woods Bay, Weyba Creek, Keyser Channel, Eenie Creek and all the canals joining them, and the gazettal names a Noosa Heads canal estate in its boundary. That's your front yard if you live near the Noosa Sound end of town. Over summer, from 1 December to 31 January, and over Easter, extra holiday limits apply to every vessel on the river downstream of the T Boat Jetty at Gympie Terrace. The Easter window moves with the school holidays each year, so check it.
There is one 30-knot area on the Noosa River. It only applies to skis registered as commercial ships with the Noosa River commercial PWC condition on their registration. Your own ski doesn't qualify, however fast the tour skis look.
Why does this land so hard on Noosa Heads? At the 2021 Census, 37.6% of private dwellings in Noosa Heads were unoccupied on census night. The census doesn't say why. What it does suggest is that plenty of skis here come out for a few weeks a year, often over the holidays. Those are the same weeks the extra limits kick in.
Then there's getting wet. Noosa Heads has no public boat ramp. The Noosa River trailer ramps are at Noosaville and Tewantin, and the jetties at Woods Bay and Ravenwood Park won't launch a trailer. So the ski leaves town either way. Your course runs at Noosaville too, on the same river.
On the licence itself: a jet ski is a personal watercraft, and to ride one you need a recreational marine licence and a personal watercraft licence. Already hold a current boat licence? Book the jet ski course on its own. Starting from scratch? The Boat and Jet Ski Combo covers both, and the regulator allows them to be done together. You do the theory online. On course day there's a theory recap, the assessment and a one-on-one practical on the ski. You must be at least 16 to hold the licence, and it never needs renewing. If you need more time on the water to feel competent, we'd rather you took it.
The course itself is the same wherever you sit it: the theory online first, in your own time, then a day on the water with a trainer before the assessment. You need a licence for any boat with an engine over 4.5 kilowatts, which is nearly every tinny, runabout and cruiser. Pass, and the Queensland licence never expires. Pick the date that suits you and book online.
