Jet Ski Licence Caloundra

The Pumicestone Passage has more rules stacked on it than any other water we train on. Your course runs right on it, from our Caloundra venue in Golden Beach.

Caloundra locals

Jet Ski Licence near Caloundra

Most Caloundra riders ask us one thing first. Where on the Pumicestone Passage can I actually let a jet ski run? It's a fair question, and the answer has layers. The Passage sits inside the Moreton Bay Marine Park, which begins at Caloundra, and in the park's go-slow areas motorised water sports aren't allowed. Two new 6-knot zones came into force here on 9 January 2026. And about four fifths of the Passage is under two metres deep. You learn all of it on the water itself. The course runs from our Caloundra venue in Golden Beach, with the theory done online first and a one-on-one session on the ski.

A jet ski is built to go fast. The Caloundra end of the Pumicestone Passage is mostly about knowing where you can't. That's the tension every new rider here has to sort out, and it's why the local detail matters more than the machine.

Start with the marine park, because it's the rule set most people have never heard of. The Moreton Bay Marine Park runs from Caloundra down to the Gold Coast, and the Passage is part of it. In the park's go-slow areas, every vessel has to travel off the plane, in a way that keeps the chance of hitting a turtle or dugong low. Motorised water sports are banned in those areas outright. Your licence card won't mention any of it. We can't tell you from a desk exactly where each go-slow area starts and stops on the Caloundra water, because they're drawn on the park's zoning maps. What we can do is make sure you know the maps exist and that they apply to you, before you ride.

Then come the speed limits. On 9 January 2026 two 6-knot zones took effect at Caloundra on the same day. One sits in the Passage around the Military Jetty and the Lamerough Canal. The other covers Bells Creek. Both apply to all vessels, and a jet ski is a vessel. Both boundaries are set by coordinates on MSQ's maps, so check the map before you assume where a zone ends. Just up the coast, Currimundi Lake has been 6 knots across the whole lake and every creek flowing into it since 2004.

The third layer is depth. Roughly 80% of the Passage is less than two metres deep, and the tide flushes it from the mouth at Caloundra and from Deception Bay at the other end. A ski pulls its water in from underneath, so shallow sand banks matter to a rider as much as to a boat skipper. The water has also changed shape lately. When council designed the new Golden Beach seawall, its engineers allowed for a 300mm rise in the Passage's tidal range caused by the Bribie Island breakthrough. More range means more water moving in and out, and banks that show up at different times from what an old-timer might tell you.

Put all that together and the case for training here is simple. If you're going to ride the Passage, learn it on the Passage. The practical runs from our Caloundra venue in Golden Beach, on this water. Theory is online first, then on the day there's a theory recap and assessment before you get on the ski.

The ski itself is a Sea-Doo. ABC chose it on purpose. It has braking, reversing and a learner mode, which gives a first-time rider a head start, and it's very stable, which helps with the docking and figure 8 manoeuvres you'll be assessed on. For the jet ski course on its own, the Caloundra practical is published as roughly 45 minutes, one-on-one. If you're doing the Boat and Jet Ski Combo, that ski session comes on top of an approx 3 hour group session in the boat.

Who books from Caloundra? Plenty of people who've waited a while to do it. At the 2021 Census the Caloundra locality's median age was 58, twenty years above Queensland's 38. If that's you, two things are worth knowing. The licence doesn't expire once it's issued. And if you need more time on the water to feel competent, we'd rather you took it.

The course itself is the same wherever you sit it: the theory online first, in your own time, then a day on the water with a trainer before the assessment. You need a licence for any boat with an engine over 4.5 kilowatts, which is nearly every tinny, runabout and cruiser. Pass, and the Queensland licence never expires. Pick the date that suits you and book online.

What's involved

Your course, step by step

Opening the throttle in a marine park go-slow area.

New riders learn the MSQ speed limits and assume that's the whole list. The Passage carries a second layer, because it's part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park.

In go-slow areas vessels must stay off the plane, and motorised water sports are prohibited. A ski doing laps is exactly what those rules are written for.

We flag the marine park layer on the course and point you to the zoning maps, so you check the go-slow areas before you plan a ride rather than after.

Riding to last year's speed limits.

Two 6-knot zones were gazetted at Caloundra on 9 January 2026, one in the Passage around the Military Jetty and Lamerough Canal and one on Bells Creek. A rider who learned the water before that date won't know.

The limits cover all vessels, jet skis included. Nobody sends you a letter when the rules on your water change.

We cover what's current on the Caloundra water during the course, and show you where the MSQ speed limit schedule lives so you can check it yourself.

Running the ski onto a sand bank.

About 80% of the Passage is under two metres deep, and the tide moves the water in and out from both ends. From the seat of a ski, deep and shallow water can look the same.

The tidal range has grown by about 300mm since the Bribie Island breakthrough, according to council's seawall design work, so the banks don't behave the way they used to.

Your practical runs on the Passage itself, so reading depth and tide is part of the day, and you learn it on the water you'll ride.

Heading for the bar because it looks like the way out.

From Caloundra the ocean is right there, and a ski feels light and quick enough for anything.

MSQ's Pumicestone Passage guide says Caloundra Bar is extremely shallow and dangerous, and that most vessels can't cross it for lack of water. Since 2022 the sea has cut a new opening through the northern tip of Bribie Island about 1.4 kilometres south, and the old bar has closed over.

The licence doesn't teach a bar crossing, and we say so. ABC Boating's bar guide says if there's any doubt, don't go. With the entrance still changing, check current local advice rather than an old chart.

Putting it off because it feels like a young person's thing.

Jet skis get marketed at twenty-somethings. The Caloundra locality's median age at the 2021 Census was 58, and plenty of first-time riders here are retirees or grandparents.

Waiting means years of sitting on the back of someone else's ski, or not riding at all.

The ski we train on has a learner mode to make the start easier, the session is one-on-one, and the licence doesn't expire once it's issued.

BoatSafe approved, backed by ABC Boating

You can check us before you book. The Queensland Government's BoatSafe register lists Australian Boating College at Caloundra under 0427 110 025, the number on this page. The training is nationally accredited through Australian Boating College, whose company ABC Licence Training Pty Ltd holds RTO 3399 on the national register. The jet ski, lifejackets and all equipment are supplied. Bring photo ID, sun protection, a towel and a change of clothes. In Queensland a marine licence can only come from an approved BoatSafe provider, so that listing is the one that counts. The training organisation behind the courses, Australian Boating College, is current on the national training register. Every approved provider works to the same floor: trainers hold a commercial marine qualification and pass a criminal history check, the training vessel is commercially certified and carries sun protection, and the organisation running it has to carry public liability cover of at least 20 million dollars. Maritime Safety Queensland audits providers and can suspend one that cuts corners.

Jet Ski Licence in Caloundra: FAQs

Are jet skis banned in the Moreton Bay Marine Park?

The rule we can point to is narrower than a ban. In the marine park's go-slow areas, every vessel must travel off the plane, and motorised water sports are prohibited. The Passage is inside the park, which begins at Caloundra. Where each go-slow area sits is shown on the park's zoning maps, so check them before you plan a ride.

Do the January 2026 speed zones apply to jet skis?

Yes. Both zones gazetted at Caloundra on 9 January 2026 apply to all vessels. One covers part of the Passage around the Military Jetty and the Lamerough Canal, and the other covers Bells Creek. The limit in both is 6 knots. The boundaries are drawn with coordinates on MSQ's maps, so look them up rather than guessing.

Can I ride out through Caloundra Bar to the open ocean?

Don't plan on it. MSQ's guide calls the bar extremely shallow and dangerous and says most vessels can't cross it at all. A new opening formed south of it after 2022 and the original bar closed over. If you ever do cross a designated bar, the rules require you to wear the lifejacket for the crossing. The course doesn't teach bar crossings.

Has the Passage changed since the Bribie Island breakthrough?

Yes, measurably. Council's design for the Golden Beach seawall allowed for a 300mm increase in the Passage's tidal range caused by the breakthrough. For a rider, that means more water moving with each tide and banks that appear and cover at different times. It's one more reason to learn on the Passage itself.

I'm in my sixties and I've never ridden. Is it too late?

No. The Caloundra locality's median age was 58 at the 2021 Census, so you'd be in good company. The Sea-Doo we train on is very stable, and it has a learner mode for new riders. Your practical is one-on-one. And once it's issued, the licence doesn't expire.

Can my grandkids ride our ski with me on board?

Someone without a licence can operate a jet ski if a supervisor holding a valid marine licence is on board and able to take immediate control. That's the rule most families use. Before you plan a ride with a young driver, ask us about the age details on the day, so everyone on the ski is covered.

Do I need a licence to ride a jet ski in Queensland?

Yes. A jet ski is a personal watercraft, so you need a PWC licence to ride one legally in Queensland. You must already hold a current recreational boat licence to sit the jet ski course on its own. If you do not have one yet, our Boat and Jet Ski Combo covers both in a single day.

Do you provide the boat and all the equipment?

Yes. You do not need your own boat, jet ski or gear. We provide the vessels, lifejackets and all training equipment, plus the launch sites and sheltered water at all three locations. Just bring photo ID, sun protection and clothes you do not mind getting a little wet, and we take care of the rest.

How long is the course?

One day on the water. You complete the online theory beforehand, then spend a hands-on day on sheltered Sunshine Coast water at Caloundra, Maroochydore or Noosa. You sit the assessment the same day, and once you pass you leave with the BoatSafe certificate you need to apply for a Queensland licence. If you need more time on the water to feel competent, we would rather you took it.
