Jet Ski Licence Birtinya

Count the places where Birtinya meets the water and you get six. None of them is a boat ramp. Four are stairs, and three of those are aluminium stairs with an underwater landing on Lake Kawana. The other two are water access ramps at Birtinya Island Park, one tagged for non-motorised craft. A jet ski isn't what any of them were set up for. So a Birtinya ski goes by trailer, and the nearest all-tide ramp is Outrigger Park at Minyama. First comes the licence. You'll do it at our Caloundra venue in Golden Beach, with the theory online and a one-on-one ride on a ski we supply.

Living beside a lake makes a jet ski feel like an easy buy. In Birtinya, the lake part is true. The easy part needs checking. Here's what the public record says about getting a ski from a Birtinya garage onto water you can ride, and what the rules expect of you when you get there.

Start with the lake, because it's the first thing every new owner looks at. Council classes Lake Kawana as artificial: a constructed saltwater body of 74.47 hectares, managed by Stockland rather than council. Council documents two navigation locks in the region, one at Parrearra and one at Pelican Waters. Neither is at Lake Kawana, and no lock or navigable outlet is published for the lake. So we can't show you a published way to ride from Lake Kawana out to the river. We'd rather say that plainly than guess.

Next, the river. Birtinya's boundary takes in part of the Mooloolah River estuary. That's real river frontage. It still isn't a launch, because there's no ramp onto the estuary anywhere inside the suburb. A ski on a trailer has to go elsewhere.

For a Birtinya rider, the obvious choice is Outrigger Park at Minyama. Council names it as the nearest all-tide trailer ramp. On a ski, all-tide matters most at the end of the day. ABC's ramp guide warns that where a ramp drops off at low tide, you should wait for the tide to rise before you retrieve. A ramp that works at any tide takes that wait out of your plans. The guide's other habits still hold: walk a ramp you don't know, and keep a line on the bow so the craft can't drift off the trailer.

Once you're on the Mooloolah, slow water comes first. All waters of the river downstream of McKenzies Bridge are 6 knots, and that includes the Mooloolaba Boat Harbour. The canals connected to the river between the entrances near Mooloolah Drive and Chelsea Crescent are 4 knots.

Then there are the rules written for jet skis alone. Section 82 of the Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 2016 says a PWC must not exceed 6 knots within 60 metres of a person in the water; a ship at anchor, moored, made fast to the shore or aground; a jetty, wharf, boat ramp or pontoon; the boundary of a bathing reserve; or the shore. It also must not exceed 10 knots within 30 metres of another moving ship. The shore part has exceptions. It doesn't apply when the ski is being operated for waterskiing, or where the waters are less than 120 metres wide and you keep to the centre or a marked channel and go straight through, or where complying would endanger someone. The maximum penalty is 200 penalty units.

Section 86 matters on tidal water too. Coastal waters include tidal waters, and in coastal waters a PWC rider must not freestyle, surf or wave jump within 200 metres of the shore if one or more dwellings are within 100 metres of the shore and visible from where the ski is. Wherever homes sit close to the water, check the bank before you play.

The course is where you practise all of this on a real ski. It runs from our Caloundra venue in the Golden Beach locality, on the Pumicestone Passage. The Passage is long, shallow and tidal, with about 80% of it under two metres. You'll ride a Sea-Doo with braking, reversing and a learner mode. ABC says it's very stable, which helps with the docking and figure 8 tasks at assessment. The Caloundra jet ski practical is published as approx 45 minutes, one-on-one.

A jet ski is a personal watercraft with its own licence, and riding one needs a recreational marine licence too. Hold a current boat licence already? Book the jet ski course on its own. Starting from nothing? The Boat and Jet Ski Combo covers both. ABC tells students in writing that they may not be competent in just one day. If you need more time on the water to feel competent, we'd rather you took it.

The course itself is the same wherever you sit it: the theory online first, in your own time, then a day on the water with a trainer before the assessment. You need a licence for any boat with an engine over 4.5 kilowatts, which is nearly every tinny, runabout and cruiser. Pass, and the Queensland licence never expires.
