Nambour is a hinterland town with a creek running through it and no salt water for twenty-five minutes in any direction. Riders here are weekend riders: the ski lives in the shed, comes out on a Saturday, and everything depends on the tow and the ramp going smoothly. The licence course is where both get sorted.

A jet ski licence in Nambour is bought by a different customer than one on the coast. Coastal owners ride often and casually; hinterland owners ride deliberately. Nambour grew as the centre of the Sunshine Coast's sugar industry, with the Moreton Central Sugar Mill operating in the heart of town from the late nineteenth century until its closure in 2003. Cane trains crossing the main street were a defining local sight for generations. The town served as the region's administrative and commercial hub long before the coastal strip developed, and it retains that role for the hinterland today, with Petrie Creek running through it and the Blackall Range rising to the west. It sits well inland of the coast, which is why every boat and jet ski owner here is a trailer owner first.
